OK - advise if I'm wrong at any point.
You had a 'full' Western Europe map, about 2 years old, on internal memory when all of this started.
You were able to successfully download the map, but then were advised that it would not fit on your unit (no surprise there, as big as the W. Europe map has become) in its 2GB internal memory.
You installed a 1GB uSD card, and things (not unexpectedly) went south from there. The new maps won't even fit in the 2GB space of the 740's internal memory, and since all of the map data must either be stored in the unit's internal memory
or on a uSD card (you can't split it between them), adding 1GB wasn't going to help. The new maps are up to around 3GB now.
If I have that much right...
Step 1, Buy yourself a 4GB uSD card. We recommend nothing slower than a Class 4. Class 6 is perfect. Any more is overkill.
Step 2, Be sure you were successful with the download. Look in the following folder for a Western European map folder of recent vintage: My Documents\TomTom\HOME\Download\complete\map
In that folder, you should find a new folder that contains your map data.
Step 3, Back up your unit in its entirety. Use the following link for the procedure -->

Ignore Home if it starts up .. just minimize it (don't close it) for now. When the backup is done, use Home to properly disconnect your unit.
Step 4, Be sure to power down your 740 before you remove the 1GB uSD card, and install your new 4GB uSD card into your 740. Power the unit up again.
Step 5, Observe that your uSD card is indeed recognized by your PC. Look at My Computer for it as another external drive in addition to the TomTom itself.
Step 6, Follow the following procedure to load your map to your uSD card, unarchiving the map to the correct drive letter matching your uSD card -->
