Hello

I installed the latest version of Home 2.8.3.2499

I tried to update my device and I didn't have sufficient memory. I think I did something stupid :doh:and inserted an empty 1GB memory card. I now get this message:

Cannot create this file N:\data_lim.chk

I would really appreciate some expert advice

Pete:sad:

Don't know about 'expert' but how about inserting a larger (4 GB, maybe) sdhc card into the device. And then try the update again.

Would help to know what your configuration was BEFORE you started the update process, and what it was you were updating (firmware or map or both), and what map (area) you have been using. One thing for sure, a 1GB uSD card isn't going to be very useful no matter where you're trying to store things.

So let's start from the beginning. Did you have a uSD card in the unit previously (before the attempt to update)? If so, do you know what it was that you were storing on the card? Some people will put the application there, but most of us only use it for maps and other items.

What map were you running (version if possible, and at least the area - how much of Europe was included?).

Canderson, thanks for your reply. No I inserted the SD card following an update I carried out where a message came up saying I had insufficient memory. This is where I believe I made a mistake. The map I'm using is a UK and Europe map, about 2 years old.

OK - advise if I'm wrong at any point.

You had a 'full' Western Europe map, about 2 years old, on internal memory when all of this started.

You were able to successfully download the map, but then were advised that it would not fit on your unit (no surprise there, as big as the W. Europe map has become) in its 2GB internal memory.

You installed a 1GB uSD card, and things (not unexpectedly) went south from there. The new maps won't even fit in the 2GB space of the 740's internal memory, and since all of the map data must either be stored in the unit's internal memory or on a uSD card (you can't split it between them), adding 1GB wasn't going to help. The new maps are up to around 3GB now.

If I have that much right...

Step 1, Buy yourself a 4GB uSD card. We recommend nothing slower than a Class 4. Class 6 is perfect. Any more is overkill.

Step 2, Be sure you were successful with the download. Look in the following folder for a Western European map folder of recent vintage: My Documents\TomTom\HOME\Download\complete\map
In that folder, you should find a new folder that contains your map data.

Step 3, Back up your unit in its entirety. Use the following link for the procedure --> https://www.tomtomforums.com/t17864-how-backup-contents-your-unit-computer-how-restore.html
Ignore Home if it starts up .. just minimize it (don't close it) for now. When the backup is done, use Home to properly disconnect your unit.

Step 4, Be sure to power down your 740 before you remove the 1GB uSD card, and install your new 4GB uSD card into your 740. Power the unit up again.

Step 5, Observe that your uSD card is indeed recognized by your PC. Look at My Computer for it as another external drive in addition to the TomTom itself.

Step 6, Follow the following procedure to load your map to your uSD card, unarchiving the map to the correct drive letter matching your uSD card --> https://www.tomtomforums.com/t18197-how-install-downloaded-map-without-using-home.html

Go 740 issue updating

Canderson

Again, thank you for taking the time to reply with such detail. I have ordered a 4GB Class 6 Sansdisk memory card. When it arrives I will follow your instructions and let you know how I get on.

Pete

Yes, please let us know how you make out. Many of us with units that allow for SD or uSD card use keep our map folders out on the card, with everything else in internal memory.
