Hello everyone, I had recently purchased a TT GO720 and was using it on a trip this past weekend. A trip where I already knew all the quickest routes. I was just using the 720 to see how accurate it was. To my suprise and dissapointment, it was giving me wrong directions and sending me through neighborhoods and a ton red lights when all I needed to do was simply stay on highways and access roads. Also, when I would come upon a new town or city, the 720 would tell me to turn left or right down unpaved farm roads when all I would have to do is keep straight on the HWY. So, my question is, what am I missing with this 720? Is there settings I am not using correctly or do I need to download new maps? Hopefully there is something I can change otherwise I'm selling this thing!

Thanks guys!

Some things to consider:

**No GPS is smart enough to be a match for local knowledge, regardless of brand.
**Depending upon type of route to create ('fastest', 'shortest'), you may have different route results. A highway may be longer but faster than the roads with red lights; however, if you selected 'shortest', then the roads with red lights will be selected.

I understand that GPS systems are no match for local knowledge of say, your hometown; however, the 720 was telling me to turn down roads that could not even be accessed by public traffic (i.e. ranch roads and oilfield roads). It was also telling me to exit highways 2-3 exits before the exit I was supposed to take. To me, this is a bit weird and frustrating... I love the unit and it's funtions but I was not pleased to that kind of performance. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! :)

Whenever I hear this statement, almost always, the shortest route option is selected. As dhn suggested, use fastest route option. The shortest route option sounds logical to the mind but when calculated on a GPS device will always give you "roads that can't be accessed by public traffic etc." Just use the fastest option and you will be satisfied with the routing. The old tomtoms had routing problems (or so I have heard) but the units these days are pretty much on the money.
Another thing to consider is that if you live on a dirt road, way off in the back woods, any GPS would give you flakey routes till you get to the main roads.
HTH:D

Ok, I can not remember which I selected when beginning my trip but that might be the cause of my concern. I will try that. Also, does it do any good to update maps with new software programs offered by tom tom or other users?

Thanks

The only LEGAL way to get new maps for your unit is through TomTom Home. Either by using the map guarantee (if you're eligible) or by buying them.
