Is anyone else having issues with their 720's falling from the windsheild while driving down the road. My mount will hold sometimes hours and then all of a sudden my $500 Tom Tom is smacking the dash and crashing to the floor. I can't really mount it low on the windshield because I can't reach the TomTom so I mount it up high near the rearview mirror.

Any suggestions?

I wasn't having an issue of mine falling, but I was having a hard time reaching the unit while driving.

I bought the proclip system for my car (720 mount and vehicle specific mount) and LOVE IT.

It was worth every penny.

There is an alternative mount for the 720. It has a longer, flexible arm so you
can put it closer to the bottom of the windshield and still be able to reach it.
This mount is listed on Tomtom's website under accessories for the 720 but it
has been unavailable for a long time now. I found it's available on Dell computer's website. I ordered mine a few days ago. 1-2 week wait though. Hope this helps.

Hello and welcome

I suggest you stick the mount to the windshield FIRST!
Once it is nice and stick good then place the unit on.

DO NOT mount the unit to the mount and stick it to the windshield. It will fall.

Good Luck

Never had an issue with it because I never used it on the windshield, I just don't like wires hanging from the windshild. Instead, I used the donut beanbag - very effective and if the mount loses suction and the 720 falls, it just drops on the donut ring. I can place it wherever I want on the dash board, easily turn it around if I have a co-pilot in the passenger seat.

It works for me! Cheers!

That's great... a projectile waiting to happen because it's unsecured, just sitting there waiting to fly around and hit you or your passenger.

I have 2 mounts that rely on a grippy foam-rubber surface on the bottom and weight that I will never use in a moving vehicle ever again. About a month ago, I was in an accident and rolled my BMW over a couple times. Anything and everything that was not bolted down went flying all over the place, some flying out of what were the windows.

So moral of the story... firmly secure your GPS. I use a ball and socket RAM mount. Since the 720's profile is more of a PDA than other TomTom units, the 3-finger spingloaded grip mount works quite well. It's not quite as easy to read when it's not in your dash or windshield, but really... with the voice prompts, it's not a big deal.

As an interim fix until you find a permanent solution, you might tether the TT to the mirror with a string so it doesn't fall if it comes loose from the windshield.

This is a very good point. I've been in an accident too, although I was lucky enough not to roll.

A proclip will securely mount your TomTom to a vent on your dashboard. It isn't a cheap holder that easily comes off then back on. Installation actually requires you to secure the device between the top of the vent and the padding on the dashboard by temporarily raising the padding itself.

This is what the mount looks like on my 2001 BMW 325i:

And with the TomTom:

I paid $65 USD minus shipping, but it's worth it in my opinion.

If you do decide to stay with the suction cup, you can help it stick better by cleaning it and your windshield with rubbing alcohol on a regular basis.

Thanks for the photos....

But I have a question. Won't the position of the clip (and attached TT) block the air from the vent it's covering? In winter here in Toronto (and I would presume for you in MN), I want warm air coming into the car from that vent. The air would certainly be reduced; further, I gotta think warm air blowing on the back of the unit can't be great for the unit (mind you, the sun beating down on it also happens, doesn't it?). Anyway, just wondering.

I think I can answer part of that one for him. Most cars have a slide switch as his does that allows you to block the vent and let it come out the vent next to it. Since it's the same force of air their probably isn't much difference. But good point on closing the inner vent.

One issue I would have with this mount is that is might need an outside antenna in the city as it is so far from the windshield. I had mine mounted on the windshield and city reception in Toronto as very poor.

Stilling waiting for a Ram Mount so I can mount it to my motorcycle next summer.

On my BMW, I can control the flow to the vent and cutting off airflow wasn't an issue. I have three other vents plus heated seats.

If you don't want to block a vent, Proclip also sells adjustable console mounts.

Anyone know of a mount for a GO 720, that is based on the cigarette lighter.
I'm looking get the power from the outlet, AND have it hold it for me.
In both my cars, this outlet happens to be in a very good location to view the device...
