Go 700 Failure

I have a Go 700. It will charge up but will no longer switch on. I have tried the reset button but it does nothing but turn it off. Can anyone help

With a device that old (it's a 2005 model), it's likely that either the internal HDD is dead or the battery is dead.

Do you hear "clicking" when you turn it on? If so it's probably the hard drive, otherwise it's probably the battery.

Press the pin reset, then hold the power button down to turn it on and keep on holding it down. It might boot into a debug screen that can tell you what is wrong with it.

Battery is easy to change on the 700 and well worth doing as they are a decent unit, if its the HDD then you can swap that out for a Compact Flash memory card which will prove to be far better (faster) in use - Mike

Mike,
I have posted elsewhere on this forum about my HDD being too small to accommodate the new maps - inevitable I guess. Reading your post, it sounds as though you have changed a HDD for a CF card. My 700 is working just fine and all I really need is a bigger drive - preferably a CF card. Can you advise me how to change my drive please? Or maybe point me at a resource where I might get it done?
Many thanks,
John

John, the best guide for swapping out the drive for a CF Card is on yourtomtom.com written by one of the moderators username sgould. I can't post a link at the moment as I am on the M6 motorway heading South (as a passenger) - Mike

Change HDD for Compact Flash Card

Mike and DHN:

Very many thanks for such quick and accurate replies to my query. I really expected to get ignored as my TomTom is so old. This seems to be a fantastic forum ... why haven't I found it before -it's a goldmine of information?!! Thanks also to Simon Gould for posting a very comprehensive guide to the job. Compact flash drive is on order. Hope you got to your destination OK Mike.

Regards and thanks,
John
