TomTom Model(s)
720, Go 1005EU
Hi I have today finally received my long awaited GO 1005 EU & I couldn't wait to open the box, the plan was for this to replace my worn out GO 720 but now I'm not sure it will. :(

So the box looked good in black with nice silver lettering & as I opened the box there it sat with a beautiful sticker on its fascia looking so cool, underneath was a Usb Cable & Cigarette Lighter adapter & thats it "so wheres the rest of it I thought" never mind Tom Tom is short changing us on accessories so I ripped the sticker off & fired it up.

After a few minutes waiting & then inputting my home location i eventually got to the map screen & by now it was dark so it had gone into night mode & man this screen is black in night mode unlike the 720 which merely dims & goes all green.

Next step plug into PC charge & download My Tom Tom as Tom Tom home is for the older devices so I whizzed through the set up & download bit logged in yadda yadda yadda until I finally got the Device sitting on a screen telling me to wait do not unplug, so I left it for 10 minutes & was convinced nothing was happening so re-booted it. Yep only had it 20 minutes & done a full hard re-boot already.
Ok so I its now up & running properly & I can finally play with it after a few minutes the traffic came up & I went into the menu to look around :eek:OMG No Itinerary Planning:eek: further investigation reveals no hidden menus like on earlier models so without further ado I dialed Tom Tom.

Why: ;) https://www.tomtomforums.com/new-members-introductions/23837-hello.html#post134637 :D a little about me basically I drive 44ft articulated lorries in & around London & we are restricted to what routes we can & cant use hence the 720 it doesn't tel me where to go I tell it where I want to go & then have all the info I need at hand like arrival times & speed cameras as-well as any tricky junctions, I also have it set to read out every street name as I have too much to concentrate on to keep watching the sat nav all day long.

So my chat with Tom Tom: Lewis was the guys name & a very helpful & pleasant guy he was I told him id just opened the box what I did & asked where was the Itinerary planning & after he went & checked he came back stating none of the new Tom Toms had this feature but it may be included in an update or future Devices. Whilst in discussion we talked about Poi's as I use Low Bridges & it turns out that I would not be able to install this on my new device as it is a closed system so therefore only Poi's that Tom Tom release will be able to be used. He then mentioned Tom Tom Work but unfortunately that product is clearly marketed a Hauliers & not individual drivers & I just cant afford ?700 for a sat nav & if I had that money then the snooper would be the ideal choice but the truth is the Snooper is useless unless you want to go a million milles out of your way to avoid low bridges as it works to the nearest foot above your set height.

So where does this leave me: well deciding weather to keep it & wait n see if Tom Tom update the device to include Itinerary & Poi's or do I return it & go for the 750 with live services or just stick with my ol trusty 720 I'm stuck as I love the look of the new Go 1005Eu but it does not have the functionality for what I wish to use it for.

Hmm I may play with it over the weekend to see if its worth keeping but some routes require me to add several poi's to enable the device to pick up the correct route.

What to Do ?

Ok while i have you attention I would like to note the functions that I require as a lorry driver just Incase Tom Tom are Reading this.

1, Itinerary planing is a must
2, to be able to add 1 of 2 available low bridge poi's/programs to my device
3, in the poi options I would like to choose to show all poi's on map & be warned if they are on my route & not one or the other.

Tomtom has announced upcoming support for your requests #1 and #2 in this link.

#3 is already available on the GO 1005.

For HGV work in the UK you would be far better off the with a Pro-9100 see Here as that has all the height/ weight restrictions etc built in to the map and can avoid them automatically - Mike

Are they offering the Pro-9100 in a "Truck" model? Like the Pro-7100, is there a "Truck" version that does manage the restrictions, narrow lane issues, etc? If not, the OP might be happier with the Pro-7100 Truck version.

To be honest I am not too sure what they (TomTom) are now offering for the HGV options, it would appear to be the newer 1000/ 1005 series hardware but it might be some time before that works due to the MyTomTom restrictions.

Without a card slot and with no direct drive access from the PC the new unit you do have is going to be pretty useless to be honest, whilst you can set up POI warnings on the 1005 you can't bulk install them as yet.

Latest I have heard is this POI installation option will be available in Jan 2011, it is unknown whether the POI installed will also handle OGG Vorbis audio files for the spoken alerts which a lot of users employ on other TomTom models. If it doesn't handle OGG files they might as well not bother adding the POI installer as far as I am concerned - Mike

The Truck version is more than added POI data.

To the OP: You might want to have a look at this offering. There may indeed be a 9000 version of it, but this should point you in the right direction:

TomTom WORK, connected navigation

Here's what that one includes (among other things):

  • Truck specific routing throughout Europe (45)
    • Avoid small streets, sharp turns & U-turns
    • Favors major over small roads
    • Uses truck specific average speed assumptions
  • Access restrictions1 in 15 European countries
    • Routes around known dimensional and weight restrictions in:
    • AT, BE, CH, DK, DE, ES, FR, HU, IE, IT, NL, LUX, SE, PT, UK
  • Restriction and dead end warners
    • Avoid unnecessary maneuvers in dead-end streets.
  • Make your own map correction with TomTom MapShare
    • Block streets for trucks based on height, length, width, weight, weight per axle or load restriction

some good info in that 1st link ill have to keep my new device up to date, I had considered the tom tom work but it is very costly & not marketed for the individual more for the buisness use as it also allows tracking & full daily downloads services. There is an alternative on the market again not cheap but ive heard the price has recently dropped, the snooper device has been built for truckers in mind but when i last lookined into this device it was clearly no good as it was designed to re-route under the nearest bridge to the nearest foot ubove you height.

ill explain:
If i pull a trailer with a max height of 13.2feet I can go under a bridge of the same hight but would preffer a minimum height of 13.4 the snooper wont see it like this it registers that the nearest bridge i can go under is 14.0ft thus making me go miles out of the way.

So far the go 1005 has behaved itself pretty well by just adding in a single waypoint to travel via, I keep my go720 in my bag incase i get a busy day, I dont rely on my sat nav to get me to my destination its more of a guide giving me more info at hand & keeping me legl by not having to hold any maps or written instructions & gives me an estimated Eta allowing me to arrive on time.

Does anyone know if a date has been announced for the new my tomtom site to be fully functional and for the missing ability to download maps, update etc?

No firm date announced yet.

There is this on the UK site and TT has said they hoped Custom pois would be available in Q1 of 2011 with Map Upgrades, etc. available 'sometime' in 2011.

Well lets keep our fingers crossed that they keep this timetable, I bought the 1005 and to be honest its dissapointing, maybe ok for middle aged drivers and mums taking their kiddies to sports days but not really any use to anyone else....

I kanda feel a bit like that but then again i like the device its just some features missing so fingers crossed they will sort this out.
The big major let down is its speed its supposed to be fast but compared to my 720 its mega slow. this may be down to more map detail & colours but i can get fired in the time it takes to plan a route for hanging a job out too long.

As I said in another post:

This is outrageous and surely contrary to consumer legislation. It is like releasing a car and saying "we are working on an update of our systems and as soon as the wheels are available we will send them to you"

I bought a TT Via 120 as a gift on behalf of my mother in law to give to my brother in law (Italian) and now I must send it back because it won't work in his language despite advertising all languages are available and downloadable. All previous models had all voices pre-installed.

This is going to cost TomTom a heap of sales as the word gets out. I am embarrassed and as mad as hell.

I recommend anyone faced with this problem returns the offending product to the store. I own a GO 700 and was thinking of upgrading. Now I am not so sure.
