Garbage Files

This may have been answered before, but I was unable to locate anything via the Search function.

I am noticing "garbage" files in my TomTom One 140s. Instead of readable characters, the filenames use graphic markers. I have been unable to delete these files via Windows because of the naming convention: "The file name you specified is not valid or too long..."

I am now unable to BACKUP my device because of these garbage filenames. Error received is as follows:

ERROR: DesktopLib/FileCopy/Error: An error occurred. Unable to create the files required to copy this item to your computer.
@ .\controller\FileCopyThread.cpp(137)

I don't remember seeing these files the first few times I explored the device. Are these files necessary for the GPS to operate? Can they be deleted? And if so, how?

While I don't have the 140, all the other tomtom's I've used never needed strange file names.

What you report sounds like a fat32 error - where a directory pointer doesn't point to a directory.

Do you always use the blue disconnect button in HOME before unplugging your tomtom from the computer?

Try running chkdsk X: /f (where X is your tomtom drive) from a command prompt in windows, it should fix any fat32 errors. Then see if the files can be deleted.

Thanks for the response.

From the dates of these files (all on May 19), I believe these were created during a failed TomTom update. I do always use the Disconnect feature, but I remember on that one occasion TomTom Home locked up on me completely.

I have tried ChkDsk with no success. So far, I have tried everything TomTom support has suggested, and nothing will remove these garbage files. The last resort was to call their 866# and discuss format/reinstalling, but after speaking with them, they stated that NOTHING can be done. I was even told that I would have to do all backups manually. I just find that too impossible to believe. I had already had one GOOD backup, so I know the device will work properly. Why won't they just tell me what to do to format and reinstall everything?

Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks again.

Formatting should be able to fix it, unless the memory is physically damaged.

1) copy your entire map folder on the tomtom to a backup, it should be called something like "USA_and_Canada_Mexico". Maps are the only thing that HOME will not reinstall for free on a tomtom, so it's important that you back the folder up

2) format the tomtom drive as fat32, turn off the quick format option. If it takes more than an hour to format, then your tomtom memory is physically defective and needs to be returned for warranty repair. (also, if this happens, try formatting on a different computer and USB cable to make sure it truly is the tomtom's fault)

3) Copy the map folder from step one back to the tomtom

4) Open tomtom HOME, and go to Update my ONE to reinstall the application. (If HOME doesn't recognize the tomtom, shut down your computer, then unplug the tomtom and turn it on until you see a red x. Then turn back on your computer, start up HOME again, and then plug back in the tomtom.)

5) Then download your computer voices

After updating & downloading poi's I got a lots of garbage files which can't be deleted & tomtom home won't allow me to back up. II tried to fix it with chkdsk /f but it made the problem worst. chkdsk resolved the problem by copping link and my tomtom one 140 run out of space, it says no map found. I deleted lots of things & copy back the map to make it work again. Now I just have 40mb left. before I fixed it I had 1.4gb.
Please advice me what to do
Thanks

-Make a backup per these instructions.
-Format the device as fat32, and make sure quickformat is disabled
- If you don't have about 1.9GB or more after formatting, call up Tomtom support as you may need warranty repair

f you have the full 1.9gb
- copy back the map folder "usa/canada/mexico" from your backup
-Open up HOME and go to "Update my ONE" and only download the application
- Download your favorite computer voice

Then everything should be fine.
