So I got my 340S, deleted the voices I'll never use, downloaded and installed the free map update and now my device is frozen. It is frozen on the screen that has the picture of what appears to be a bridge with blue sky in the background, the 'IQ Routes Technology' icon in the upper left and the 'TomTom' logo in the lower left. If I hold the power button, after about 10 seconds the screen will go neon green and then 2 seconds later will power off. When I turn it back on, it will go a far as this picture with the bridge and then freeze. Plugging into TomTom Home doesn't change the condition, even though Home can detect its presence and tells me everything is up to date....Suggestions???

Don't suppose you made an Explorer backup of your unit's contents prior to getting any updates??

This sometimes occurs if the unit is not disconnected properly from the computer (disconnected before all data is written to flash memory).

Try holding the power button for about 15 seconds and see if that helps (it's resetting the unit).

If that doesn't help, make an Explorer backup of your unit's contents. Ensure hidden folders.files are showing. Once you are sure the backup was done ok, delete all the loose files in the root of the unit, NO folders or files within them.

Connect to Home and it'll offer an application. Download and install. Now, remove the unit properly from the computer. Use Home's device disconnect icon on the bottom right. Restart the unit. Does that help?

For sure the reset option has not solved the problem.

I'm now making an explorer backup. Says its gonna take about an hour. I've also made a backup via TomTom Home, but that was before I ran the map update.

After the Explorer backup (make sure it is on the computer), format the internal memory. Don't use quickformat. Restore the Explorer backup. See if that helps.

Ok. So I made the explorer back up. Deleted all the loose files, plugged into Home and got the Update notification. Proceeded to update and had an error on the following file:

data_ra.chk

Update didn't load and now the GPS is giving me a blue screen with a picture of the device and a blinking red circle with a white X in it....

If you have the Explorer backup of the entire contents, did you format the internal? If not, do so.

It stopped about 5% into the format and said "Windows was unable to complete the format."

...hold the phone...round 2 is in process and may work...

Good news!

We've been inundated the last couple of weeks with posts by members who are having freezing problems with their units. Often after map updates or application updates. It's almost as frustrating for us as it is for the members such as yourself who it happens to.

It's why we consistently preach "Explorer backup, Explorer backup" over and over...

Just for times like this.

I've just got my brand new TT 335XL today and updated the map, but something went wrong when I updated application (IQ route). And I have the same problem just like this user. Then problem is I didn't make a explorer backup before the updates. Does making an explorer backup right and format the memory helps? Will that application error remain in the memory?

What went wrong?

Often, backing up with Explorer, reformatting and restoring will help situations where data is corrupt.

First, try this as it may be a simple error with a simple fix.

If that doesn't work, it it's within 30 days of purchase and you have your receipt, backup what you can and then just go format the Tomtom (quickformat disabled). If it errors, then repeat the format.

Then power off/on the Tomtom, then plug into Tomtom home and it should give you a map for free and the required applications. If you have issues with the map call up Tomtom and their phone support will resolve it or just warranty swap the device.
