First day with my 720

I searched these forums before purchasing my 720, so I thought I'd put some comments up here for anyone else looking to purchase.

First some things I really liked:
1. entering addresses is very easy. Adding to Favorites is easy.
2. In fact the whole user inteface is the best in the business. They have covered just about every software option you could possibly want for manipulating the display.
3. Pairing my Motorola Q with the 720 was easy and took no time at all.

Now for my disappointments:
1. On typical roads there is too much ambient noise for the 720's speaker to be heard. I use the FM transmitter to play music and direction instructions through my car stereo. (works very well.) I am extremely vexed that the 720 does not transmit the handsfree phone call through the FM. It is only sent to the speaker which you cannot hear under normal operating conditions. This is a major heart break for me.
2. The ipod control sounds nice but I wish it was a standard audio input so I could use any brand mp3 player. I will probably look online for an electrical schematic so I can make my own audio input cable.
3. I would really have liked to use the Tomtom with Microsoft Streets and Trips. Sometimes the 720 screen is too small to get the big picture. Actually for $500 I expected some form of Streets and Trips to ship with the 720.

Ideas
1. I think it would be cool if the 720 (docked with computer) could download historic trip information so you could see where you made the wrong turns. Download a GPS trail.
2. Some post trip stats would be good as well. Especially for trucking managers.

Just curious what kind of vehicle you're driving, and if you've measured the ambient noise in the cockpit in typical driving conditions. I agree that it would be brilliant if you could pipe inbound calls through your sound system (maybe this will be a 920 feature).

Streets and Trips alternative

You can use Google Maps to do your itinerary (with waypoints even!) and then convert it to a TomTom itinerary.

Use this webpage for the conversion or download the script (from the webpage).

http://houghi.org/tomtom/

ps don't forget when doing this too:
Zoom into the start point as much as possible and move the starting point a few meters. You can even put it back. Do the same for the end point.
Now copy the URL from the Google Maps website into the area above and click the button.
This will make an *.itn file that you must copy or move to your Tomtom device.

Newbie here! Sorry...

I did the conversion as mentioned above and on the website cited. What folder do I copy the itm to and how do I move it to the tomtom 720?

my opinion of the 720

hi all,

the tomtom 720 is my first navigation. So far this unit is performing pretty well. The only disappointment and trouble i have is the fm transmitter. Like stated previously on the above post, the fm transmitter refuses to route the phone calls.

However, the interesting thing is it worked the first two days!!! When i first got it, the unit was transmitting the calls through my car stereo  My joy was soon over when it stopped doing that the third day...

Very disappointing, i contacted tomtom help, i got an email reply saying that the fm transmitter is not routing the calls b.c my phone is incompatible but it worked for two days...

I can't help but wonder if it is a software issue. The tomtom website states that fm transmitter can be used for music, navigation, and even hands free calling. In my mind, if the hands free calling is working through the internal speaker why isn't it workign for the fm transmitter. It seems to me that the audio output preference from internal speaker to transmitter is "bugged"

My Sprint ppc 6700 phone has bluetooth version 1.2. Some of the phones listed on tomtom has bluetooth version 1!!! so i wonder why the older version is supposed to work while the newer one isnt? The phonebook can be copied, data can be used for tomtom plus, and calls can be received and made but not through the car stereo...

Maybe someone with a listed compatible phone can try the fm transmitter.
I like this unit and really don't want to return this unit b.c if this issue but tomtom falsely advertised this unit on their website

Try this.....

Have you tried this workaround for transmitting your phone calls to the car speakers? https://www.tomtomforums.com/showthread.php?p=21059#post21059

It worked on my 910, I'd be curious to see if it works on the 720 now too.

i tried it but it failed.
i believe the lineout intiates the output if an audio wire (3.5mm) is connected to it.

Things may be set up different for the 720 then. I have no problem with phone output through the FM txer with the 910.

I'm hearing a great deal about the new TT720 and one thing which has got my attention is the map sharing and the ability to fix maps. my question concerns correcting maps. Will one need to navigate the road to fix it or to even establish a new road which is missing. i have the new map and there is a new mall which is on the map and I would love to be able to correct it at some time. I am not sure what happened but there are roads on the TT map which are not in the mall complex. I don't know if revisioins were made but it is way off. As you exit this mall to get back on the highway the TT map shows you bypassing the road as you enter the road-then driving on the grass-and then it positions you correctly on the road. So much for new mapping!

yes Pedro, i tried that many times but with no success sigh
sometimes, i will get nothing. music and instruction will be playing through stereo but once i tried phone calls, everything is silent. When i end the call, no sound come through anymore. i have to restart the device. I hope this is just a minor software issue

I know this thread is a little old; I don't know if anyone has figured how to unlock this feature on the go720. I tried it as well and got nothing hope someone knows something I don't. As well I am having issues with the internal microphone it is really weak any tips with that.

Waypoints

Quick question - I just started using Google Maps and seems to work really well, much easier than TT if you have to make route adjustments.

Question - how do you put in waypoints?

I am thinking if you don't put in waypoints then the route changes made in Google will revert back to the way TT normally routes you which may not be the way you want it. Or does TT use the exact route from google every time. Any information will be helpful, thanks.

To create way points with Google maps, just click somewhere along the route on Google maps and drag it a bit to create a 'way point'. Drag along the same road you want to go... enough to create lat/lons for a waypoint. You'll see the waypoint pop up in Google maps on the left-hand side of the screen. It's a bit of extra effort, but if it's an often used route, it's worth it. This should force TomTom to go the way you want to go.

Here's an example of an itinerary where I added some way points to force TomTom to use 9A eastern bypass around Jacksonville, FL:
____________

-deleted lat long ||4| <- beginning address hidden
-8020042|2659131|CR-812 W/Lantana Rd|1|
-8039565|2741353|Okeechobee Rd/SR-70 E|1|

-8160350|3035476|N University Blvd|1|
-deleted lat long |N University Blvd|3| <- ending address hidden
~
____________

Hope this helps.
