External Memroy Question...

Hello Everyone,

I'm a proud new owner of a refurbished 730 Go. I'm pretty happy with the unit so far, expect I was pretty upset when I found out I wouldn't be able to get the latest map guarantee with a refurbished unit. Nowhere on amazon.com did it say this and I think this is a terrible policy and super poor customer service. It costs them nothing to allow a new owner 1 update to get the unit up-to-date. Looks like they want a frustrated customer right off the bat.

Now to my question though, with the 2 GB internal storage capacity (less when formated) and the 1.7+ gb north america map, there is almost no free space on the internal memory. Thus, I plan on purchasiing a memory card to add all the voices, pois, etc. I want. I have an mp3 player so mp3s and picture files are not that important.. So I wondering...

1) When I purchase and insert the memory card (1) Do I have do a back-up of the entire internal memory and then put it on the external drive. For example, if I buy a 4 gb memory card and restore the entire 2 gb internal memroy on the card ,it only leaves me 2 gb remaining for files.). Thus, I am wondering if the unit can read/use the internal and external memory at the same time or is it just one of the other. According to tomtom home software, you have to pick one or the other and it doesn't look at it like 2gb internal + 4 gb external = 6 gb total. Any advice as to what is required to put onto the external so that it is recognized, but which is not just a copy of the internal (if possible), would be great.

Thank you very much in advance,

JHaze

The 730 will see the sdhc storage IN ADDITION to the built in 2 gigs of internal storage.

So, you can put your NA map folder on the 4-gig sdgc card, maybe all your mp3's in a folder called mp3 (all lower case) on the sdhc card as well.

The unit's application firmware will recognize the existence of the map on the sd card and everything will work just fine.

YOu should really only leave your usa maps in the unit. YOu can use any addionional cards for voices, maps, music etc. The memory on the unit is pretty fast . The memory on different cards varies too much. Both areas are recognized when unit is on. You can remove all but one computer voice, different map colored choices, different car icons. etc and move it to your sd card. With only the north american maps and one voice ( I choose the Computer Voice DAVE as the best) their is plenty of room for updates from mapshare or to add other points of interest
