i have just purchased a 330xl-s i downloaded the info from the home page. Before backing up the unit, while downloading the maps it came up with an error message saying that i did not have enough space.

It continued to download all the information, at the end of the process it showed completed. My concern is, i'm not sure if i have all the needed files eg:maps. Can i erase all the files off my Gps and reinstall them again, and then back up the files onto my computer.

The best thing to do as soon as you buy a new TomTom is to make a complete backup using Windows Explorer before doing anything else (making sure that all hidden files are visible.) If it's too late for that now and you have downloaded a new map, make a backup ASAP.

If you downloaded a new map using the Home software, Home will keep a copy of the map on your PC. To answer your question, Yes, you are able to completely wipe a device (erasing EVERYTHING on the device using Windows Explorer) and have the Home software reinstall everything from scratch. I do that now and then if my device ever starts to act up.

BACKUP first, erase everything on the device, use TomTom Home to reinstall the NavCore OS software by hitting "update my device." When the OS is installed, follow the directions, and then reconnect the device to the PC and hit "update my device" over and over untill no more updates appear. You will then have to install your map using "Add maps." If you are unable for whatever reason to add a map because you don't have a copy locally (Home will tell you) you will have to call TomTom tech support for them to add your map (latest if you're within the 30 day period) to your account. You will also have to reinstall your voices.

Let us know how it goes.
