Hi. I have never driven abroad before and am thinking of driving to Belgium via the ferry from Dover to Calais.

i would be relying on the TomTom Go Navigation app. Is this reliable for this sort of trip? Is there a way to use it so it won’t use a load of phone data? Any beginners advice for going abroad would be much appreciate.

Thanks in advance.

Hello
Normally, it does not consume too much mobile data, it depends on the subscription you have with your telephone operator which can cost more abroad.

On GO navigation, the map is installed on your phone, so you deactivate the mobile data.

How would I set the destination to go via Dover ferry as it says directions via channel tunnel?

Do you create your route directly on the app or using the tomtom.com map?

You create your route from A to B then launch the route displayed on the Dover map and press for half a second where you want to go a window opens select add to route.

The best is to create your route directly using the Tomtom.com map it is much easier.

I'm guessing that the route is taking you via the M20. See if you can select the M2 which should take you to Dover port. If it easier to take the M20 then lookout for the junction for the A249 by Maidstone to Sittingbourne, then take the M2/A2 South to Dover port.

When I travel to France, Bruges or Lille, I usually create a route from home to either the Tunnel or to the Ferry first. And then another one from Calais to my destination.

When I travelled to the South of France in June I created three routes, one to Dover, one to Issoire and the last one to my destination.

Make sure you have both ferry maps for Europe installed, even though Mediterranean doesn't seem logic for Dover - Calais.
