TomTom Model(s)
Go 730
Hi All,
New th the forum but have had my Go 730 for a couple of months now. I have a couple of questions that I hope you all can answer for me. If these have already been addressed in another thread, I apologize and feel free to point in that direction.

A little info first. I recently bought a new PC with Vista Ultimate. Now I'm seeing the following all of the time.

1. Everytime I dock and then connect to my PC, I get asked if I want to install the TomTom Home2 software, even while TomTom Home2 is launching.

2. Whenever I want to operate my TomTom with the software and add a new favorite address, the screen doesn't show the numbers for the address # but it lets me enter them from the PC keyboard and when it gets to the point where I give my new favorite a name, it doesn't show any of the options that used to show( the keyboard, space bar, etc.). It used to look just like the actual device does when I add addresses from it.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the software a couple of times. Any suggestions.

1. Look in the root of the unit using Finder for a text file called autorun.inf. The contents should look like this:
--------------------------------------
[autorun]
action=Run TomTom HOME
#open=InstallTomTomHOME.exe
label=TomTom
icon=tomtom.ico
[DeviceInstall]
#This section is empty; autorun will not install device drivers to your PC.
-------------------------------------
notice where I've added the # symbol in front of 'open'? You do the same. See if you are prompted the next time.

Thanks but can you or anyone offer some insight into the other issue on my list? It started after I installed version 2 of Home on a PC with Vista Ultimate.

If I understand his question, he is saying that he doesn't get the virtual keyboard display, just a blank screen with the cursor flashing. He can only type from the computer keyboard and when doing so, things like shift don't work. I've noticed the same phenomonon since updating the Home software and the navcore. I'm not sure which update did the deed. When I add a favorite or POI by street address, I am prompted for city, street, number then shown a screen with the address just entered highlighted for me to enter the name of the favorite. No virtual keyboard is displayed but I can enter letters numbers and symbols from the keyboard. However, the shift key doesn't work. I'm not sure if this is a change or a new "feature" but presently the only time you get the virtual keyboard is when the TomTom is not connected to the computer.

I see this too, and it annoys me no end that I cannot capitalize any words!

I don't understand this behavior at all. Obviously shifted characters are allowed since the symbols that are shifted numbers will work. It's just the letters themselves that won't appear in upper case. I would assume that Home is sending the keystroke's ASCII value to the GPS so I can find no rhyme or reason for the lack of capital letters.

I can't capitalize either when using the PC. So what is my solution? Either I deal with the letters not being capitalized, or I use the actual TomTom to type in letters. No big deal here for me. Besides that, I'm not having any issues at all with Vista Ultimate 64-bit and the Home software.

Thank you. That is exactly the issue I'm having. As far as I've seen so far, it's the only thing weird that is happening since I upgraded to version 2 and to Vista Ultimate.

Do any of the TomTom techs monitor or communicate thru this forum for information on how their product is doing?

Unfortunately no. This is an unoffical forum. You could email TomTom though and let them know what is going on. With enough or strong complaints they actually do listen to you. You can also call but I myself have never had a problem emailing. If you are looking for an answer right away then calling them is the best solution. When entering a favorite, the screen isn't the same on the PC as it is the TomTom which is strange.
