Computer Voices not working

Just got a TomTom One XL-S. When I select a human voice on my unit, it reads the directions as it should with no issues... When I select a computer voice (to take advantage of the text-to-speech) I hear nothing. My volume is up, so it's very odd indeed.

UPDATE:
I just noticed that despite paying for and receiving a box that is labeled TomTom One XL-S, the unit inside was an XL! (No text-to-speech.) The serial number on the box even matches the one on the unit. Bizarre. If anyone else got one for Christmas, they might want to double-check theirs!

When choosing a computer voice, you will get a second screen. Which option(s) did you choose on that screen ? Do you have at least option 'Read aloud street names' ticked ?

XL or XLS?

I just got an XL S for Xmas and the text to speech was not working. All the correct options were selected (i.e. read street names) but it would not work. I updated the software and now I am getting the red circle with white cross death icon.

After reading your post, I see that my unit also says XL and not XL S although the box says XL S. How did you get your issue resolved?

XL or XL-S

A newbie here also.
XL-S units mis-identified as XL.
XL-s has more memory than XL.

Check:
Press lower right corner of screen.
Press Version #
Next screen should show about 60MB RAM

XL is about 30MB RAM I believe

Also, the XL is in a blue box. The XL-S is in a yellow box.
Yes, on the bottom of the unit it is identified as an XL.

Back to Garmin, I think

Hmm... Well, apparently TomTom didn't bother to go through the trouble of branding the XL-S units differently. So I DO have the right unit. However, my TTS is still not working. I've also been frustrated by the Home software insisting my unit is a TomTom GO, when it's most certainly not.

I have been a happy Garmin user for over a year, but I was attracted to TomTom's extra features and interactivity. But I don't think TomTom is quite ready for prime time here in the USA. Will most likely return this unit and get a Garmin Nuvi.

I ran into the same problem, ie street names not being spoken. I had to select a computer voice only and then check the box for street names. I had selected a non-computer voice and the box for street names was greyed out. When you select a non-computer voice, it allows you to select a computer voice for warnings, etc. but that computer voice will not allow the unit to speak the street names. If you want additional computer voices, you will have to download them. Or at least that is what I found out. I could be missing something as this is my first TomTom.

I'm having the same collection of problems, and a few more..

-- My XL-S is labeled as an XL, which is confusing... (but I agree -- I do believe it's actually an XL-S)
-- My human voices work fine, but my computer voices do not (I can't find any solution for this...)
-- My HOME software (on a Mac, version 1.5) does not appear capable of letting me use MapShare.. is that correct?
-- I cannot send locations found on Google Maps to my TomTom - I get the error message "You have clicked an 'Add to TomTom' button. Unfortunately, TomTom HOME cannot add the item to your TomTom device because there is something wrong with the button. Please report this error to the webmaster of the website."

I'm a brand new GPS user, and this is my first device.. I really don't want to return it, but the three functions I wanted to use (TTS, Mapshare, and integration with Google Maps) aren't working! What a mess! Please help!

non-functionial tts

I have all the same symptoms regarding tts. Any answers on how to fix the computer voices on the One XL-S?
