Coline - you cannot receive private messages, so I was unable to reply there to the message that you sent to me. You're not alone, however... I saw yet another message in this area that requested this information.

used TT ONE for a trip - worked perfectly.
Came home. Tiny town of 8,000 in NW Manitoba. Forgot about TT.
Recently, tried TT. Dead as a nit.
Plugged it in to Mac. Waited for battery to charge.
Plugged it into car lighter. Waited for battery to charge.
No luck in either spot.

Short story:
how do I charge the battery ?

paix,
Mrs. Bettson
Lithium Ion batteries don't like to be discharged below a certain point, and leaving one sit for a VERY long time can cause that. A good rule of thumb is to never "idle" a lithium ion powered device on a low battery. Always charge it up good before putting it on the shelf.

I've seen the lack of ability to charge an "old" one work out two ways -- a battery that won't charge even when the charger is making a valiant attempt, or a charger that doesn't start the charge because it can't even "see" the battery. Recharging one that is this low can be quite a trick, and the charger may even prevent it intentionally for safety reasons.

Depending upon the charging circuit in the ONE, it may be possible to jolt the poor thing into life by repeated attempts to charge it. If it is still possible to charge it at all, plug/unplug cycles of about 15 minutes over a period of several hours may cause it to develop enough charge so that the charger can complete the job. Worth a try, and much easier than your only other option -- a battery transplant.

FWIW, the transplant can be done for the price of a new battery (about $22 plus shipping) and about an hour of someone's time who's handy with such things.

Although my battery swapping tutorial was specific to the x20/x30/x40 series units, it may well serve for instructions to replace a ONE battery. Worth a look here:

The battery itself can be procured here ... I believe it's the F650010252 model:

This is good advice. We who are used to 'deep-cycling' NiCad batteries (good for NiCad - bad for Lithium Ion) need to treat Lithium-based batteries much differently. Here's a good article with more info:

How to prolong lithium-based batteries

Unless you do a pin reset the tomtom is always on. Even though you shut it down, it stays on in some kind of sleep mode.

if you're going to store it for some time, do a pin reset.

Mine will pretty much kill the battery after sitting about a week after a normal shutdown. Before a recent month long trip I did a pin reset and there was no battery loss on my return.

Since there's no "pin" to reset on the ONE, is there any way at all to actually turn it off? The TT site mentioned pushing the (rather misnamed) on-off switch and holding it for 15 seconds... perhaps that's what she needs to do?

I'm curious, because I like to hop in the car and turn it on without messing with the cord. One day, I'm sure, I'll forget to turn it off... this information may then be of more than merely academic interest.

My one is almost two years old and has the pin reset. from the posts here I think holding down the on/off button on the newer units does the same thing. If it has been reset, the next bootup will take longer than normal.
