can anyone make me a custom start up/shut down image?

how do I access the files in the GPS itself to make the change?

in other words, THIS - Replace the splash.bmp file in the root of your TomTom device with the new image file.

After you made your new splashw.bmp (480 x 272) connect via USB and open MyDrive Connect (formerly MyTomTom Support Application).
The line below MyDrive says Add community content.
Click it and it will open a new tab, showing you what can be added, deleted or copied to the PC.
One of the items is "Community images on device."
Copy to computer if you want, or just in case.
Now click the big + sign at "Add image" and a drop down will open that lets you Browse for your new splashw.bmp and then click Install.
That should be it.
