TomTom Model(s)
1005 World
A sad day after 8 years owning a tomtom and spending a small fortune on my latest one its time to defect , ive had the 1005 world model and had nothing but problems (wont connect to live traffic well only when it feels like it not when i really need it ,switching off without reason etc..) so its going back ,ive been amazed the amount of people on here and other forums with the same problems, and tomtom all but dismissing the problems are there, so im afraid theyve lost what was a loyal customer , a big thankyou to those that have tried to help.
My next Question ,what sat nav should i go for now ?
im looking at the nuvi 3590lmt or are there better ? is this as good as the reviews im reading ?
Any help or suggestions will be much appreciaed.
Thankyou

Very confused ,now i read the garmin takes two cables in order to charge and recieve traffic sounds like to much hastle.
And the wife has just said she likes the 1005 (when it works)
Is it worth taking a chance and just swapping it for a replacment 1005 ?
Honestly dont know what to do.

Traffic reception over the RDS cable is certainly variable .. much depends upon how close you are to any of the FM stations that are broadcasting the information. Same will be true with a Garmin RDS system. Do you live and do you travel primarily in the area of major cities?

The "switching off without reason" is reason enough to take it back and exchange for another.

Also, have you updated the firmware on that unit since you've owned it?

Thanks for your reply
i did update the firmware when i got it ,
this is when all the problems started.
it was fine until i connected it to tomtom.
should i take a chance on another ?

One of our mods has a 1005 World and seems to like it. If you run into any troubles during an update on a new one, please check in here as we may be able to sort a solution for you. For some time now, it's been pretty rare that a firmware update has bothered one of these units.

I'd definitely take the other back, though. That business of shutting down for no reason ... there are ways it can be configured to do that, but only if it finds it's not connected to power. Wonder if there was something wrong with the car adapter? Anyway, if you swap it out for another, odds are good it will behave in that respect.

What sort of TomTom did you have before the 1005 World?

Thankyou
i had one of the first tomtom go's
i had it years and went everywhere with it ,not ounce did it let me down, it just got to old in the end,it did me proud.
you can imagine my dissapointment when i saved up a small fortune to get the latest tomtom and all it gave me was problems.
even going through the menu would take a time while it thought about it.
Do you think i was just unlucky and had a dodgy one ?

Yup, I do.

The new menu structure will take a bit of adjustment -- even the newer versions of the 'old' models used a different menu setup. All of the newer models use this new setup. What's funny is when I've got both a 'new' and 'old' version on the dash while testing/reviewing the new ones and forget what I'm poking. TomTom has this "user interface group" who thinks the new design is better. Some of us beg to differ, but then, we've been using the old style menus for years.

I suppose I will have to connect the replacement to tomtom in order to get the latest map guarantee , and it will probably update the firmware at the same time.
Is it safe to do this with a new one ? Have they sorted any bugs they had. ?

I think the OP was complaining about how slow the menu screens are to react, not the layout of them!

Yes, the new models still have real issues with the speed of the user interface.

However TomTom have produced a typical TomTom fix for the problem.... The latest updates to the software for the OLD model slows them down significantly too, so they hope no-one will notice the difference any more!
