I just purchased a 630 and I connected to my computer and it said it had an update so it did its thing then when I checked my device to try it it says no map found and when I look at the contents in manage my navagiation device it says under maps North american 2GB this item cannot be used on this device because it needs to be activated first then when I click more information it says this item does not work on your device. So why did it update and what do I do now with a brand new device that has no maps? How do I fix this?? Please does anyone know how to fix this I have contacted Tomtom support but it has been a week and I have gotten no response except for an automated email that siad they will get to me when they can. Anyone have any ideas???????

Now that's a real pain in the neck... sorry to hear things started out so badly for you.

You'll find the toll free number for TomTom will get this dealt with FAR more quickly than any email. I've always had much better luck that way.

First, you did set up your account at TomTom beforehand, right?

What I would do now is delete the entire map folder from your TomTom unit with your PC. I don't see your location in your profile, but if you are in the U.S. or Canada, you are looking for a folder that starts with the words North_America.

Once you have deleted the map manually, use TomTom Home again to try to "Update My Go". It should note your map as missing and offer to send it to you again.

As a word to the wise - see the link here https://www.tomtomforums.com/genera...-what-do-first-when-you-get-your-tom-tom.html and be certain that once you are up and running, that you have done a full backup. If you had backed up right away, we could likely recover your map problem from the backup copy you'd have on your PC.

Thanks for the advice, I will try your suggestions. I had a TomTom 510 before this so yes I did have an account on Tom Tom and naturally I didn't think of backing up cause I didn't think it was going to download anything major. I found it strange that I got a map not activated and then when I clicked it for more information it said it wasn' t compatible for the 630 it was the North American 2GB. The whole thing is odd I never had any issues with my 510. Yes I am in the US

Did you use the same e-mail address for the new toy as the old 510? If so this is your issue, each device MUST be registered with a unique e-mail address to work with the stupid servers at TomTom, you can even use a made up e-mail account if you want that doesn't work in reality but the server will be happy to accept it!
Try "[email protected]" which certainly won't exist, but it would work for your new device as would "M_Mouse@disney_World.com" - Mike

OUCH. Mike's note above the need for a different email address is spot on. That's going to need fixed. It's silly, but each unit requires a unique user e-mail ID.

Further to that -- by any chance do you still also have old Home backups for your 510 on the computer you are using? If so, I would STRONGLY recommend that if you have any reason to keep them (i.e., you still have your 510) you segregate them from your current stuff, making them invisible to Home by renaming the entire My Docs/TomTom/Home folder to something else. As you can see, TomTom's "application" doesn't take into account that a household might have more than one TomTom (there's a lousy business decision!) and that a user might be trying to support both on one computer.

To whomever gets the message about the activation code is needed. The Clear Flash tool sometimes remedies that problem.

Thanks for all the responses, I called support yesterday and she was very helpful. She had me delete the maps folder and the download folder and then connect to home and update, it downloaded the map and all if fine. It seems to have been an issue with having info from the 510 on there and the reason I got a message that the map couldn't be used with my device was probably because of a corrupt file. So everything is good, now if I could find a way to get the traffic to work without having to pay more money to Verizon I would be happy.

Check out the antennas by digitalonesurplus on ebay. Less than $20, and it works fine on my 930.
