Connected Tom Tom to computer to do regular update and I find that I have a big red X on the screen and unable to do anything. Have tried reset ~ no difference. Have removed SD card ~ no difference. Can't get connected to computer to do a system restore. At a bit of a loss what to do next. has anyone come across this problem and has a fix?

Did you have a back-up?? When I first got my 510 I somehow deleted the map. I have no idea how I did it but i ALSO GOT THE Big Red X. I restored and it was fine.

Can you use Explorer to see the unit when it's connected to the computer? If so, and you have a backup on your computer, try copying the file ttsystem from your backup to the root of the unit.

Then, use a pin reset and see what happens.

Thank you for responding dnh & JimT. seem to have got myself deep in the poo. I can't get into my TOM TOM using explorer. doesn't recognise. The only way to get in for some functions is the Home program. I have a 2G SD card in the slot and for some reason it only seems to be reading from that. I did do a reset which might have upset something.

All I get when I switch on, is a message telling me I have no maps. When I try to reinstate the maps I get another message telling me to remove items as not enough space.

Any clues?

While in Home, are you able to serch for content on your TT I not only do backups but I regularly copy my files to the computer through Home. If you copied your contenet you may be able to download it to your TT through this page on Home. Also try to determine the available amount of memory showing. If your map is gone there should be plenty of room left. Maybe your application is gone!!

Think I have cracked my problem :)

Did a chkdsk on my TT internal drive. Found loads of corrupt files!! Formatted drive ~ copied Files from back up to drive and "Bobs your Uncle" all worked. This is the edited version of what I did. Took me 3 days to sort.

Thanks for all your feedback. nice to know there are a few experts out there if I need a bit of help.

I'm glad it worked for you BUT.....................

Those 'corrupted files' reported by Windows were probably NOT corrupted files at all! You see, the TT software is linux based; as such, its naming convention for files is not known by Windows. What appear as corrupt files (those with an extension of .chk) are, in reality, necessary VOICE files required by the TT software.

I had that issue and had to send my unit back to TT. They returned a factory refurbished unit to me. Since it came with older maps than the ones I just bought TT Support reset my maps and let me download them again. It took longer than I wanted but they did get everything sorted out for me.
