Battery Charging

Hi
I'm new to GPS. It seems like a good device to have especially for someone who has short term memory loss.

I have 2 questions and I hope I didn't put this in the wrong area.
I have a TomTom 1 XL model. I've looked in the instructions a few times but I can't seem to find the amount of hours that this device needs to fully charge. Normally, most devices shut off when charging has been completed. This GPS doesn't do this. Is it possible to tell me the amount of time of charging is needed on this model when the battery is totally empty and is there something that's supposed to happen visually when the complete charging is finished?
Thanks very for any help that you can offer. It's appreciated.

When you first get a unit, the Quick Start sheet suggests a charge of 2-4 hours (closer to 4) before you do anything. There is no easy way to tell when your unit is fully charged. The green light on the unit stays on when fully charged and while charging.

If you tap the satellite bars on the unit, the next screen shows the version number of the firmware but, if I remember correctly, the top right shows a graphic indicator of how much charge the battery currently has.

I just wanted to say thanks for your quick response. I scribbled your info down and put it in the directions booklet.

that's correct and if the unit is actually charging, the word "charging" appears under the battery indicator. it disappears when the unit is fully charged.

I think that the unit will stop charging when fully loaded. It is just that the "connected" light does not go off (obviously if it stands for connected).

The visual charge indication when connected to HOME appears to be a bit wacky. It will show fully charged and, looking at it ten minutes later without any activity, it'll flash from 40 % to 100 %.

I, after the initial four hour charge, have not given it any further consideration.

Except for my 920 when connected to my laptop and operated from within Home. There it still shows "charging", even though it is fully charged. When disconnected from the laptop and operated on battery power, the battery indicator shows a full charge.

I understand both the satellite signals AND the battery strength shown in the emulator (Operate My Go) are simulations and NOT the actual measurements.

yes, that's one of the reasons I rarely use the home software. as DHN says it's a simulation. If on a wall charger or on the car cable you don't see "charging" under the battery icon, it is indeed fully charged. that's the only way you can tell that the charge is finished.

And now again, I'd like to thank everyone else that responded to my questions. Because some of these answers weren't in the instruction books, I found that reading the replies gave me a much more hands on feeling about this machine.
If you don't mind, I just want to post one more question concerning something that happened to my wife while using the machine 2 weeks ago. She wants to know if there's a defect in the machine. I'll start it as a NEW TOPIC. Thanks again.

Got news for you. When I got the unit I couldn't find an answer to any of my questions. Most of them got answered in the fora.

About a month ago I printed out the manual and started reading a chapter or two before going to bed. Surprisingly most of it now made sense and I actually found some clarification on some items with which I hadn't bothered.
