Backup to SD question

I backed up my TT fairly soon after turning it on. It came with Home 1.4 and saved the backup in a folder ending with the name GO\Backups in a folder named Backup01.

I upgraded to the latest everything, which included HOME 2. I then re-backed up my device and this time it saved in a folder ending with the name ONE/Backups in a folder named Backup01.

I have read that the next time I backup using HOME, it will over write the Backup01 contents. Does anyone know if this is accurate? I make copies of this before I backup, so it is just an FYI question.

And the real question: I know I can use a 2GB SD card in my TT V4(LE/New Edition). I can't seem to fathom how to use HOME to move everything to the card. Do I just insert the blank card? Since there isn't an "OS" or boot file on the blank SD, how do I get the original backup on the SD from HOME since it usually asks about connecting to the computer?

And if I use Windows Explorer to write to the card, what directory or folder level do I start the copy from? (ONE, Backups, Backup01, for example). I assume I need to have a top level folder or files in the root of the SD directory structure.

Thanks, and hope I didn't make this too messed up of a post.

The ONE/Backups is a new directory. In my opinion it sure took them long enough! We have TomTom ONEs not TomTom GOs, so the directory should always have been /ONE/ in the first place.

All that being said, if they follow the same precedure as the previous updates with the /GO/ directory, they will overwrite the /Backup01/ data and not create a /Backup02/ as you would expect.

The fact that they have a new /ONE/ directory, maybe they updated their backup routine to increment the Backup numbers, but I wouldn't trust that. i would assume it is going to overwrite that data.

When you want to copy from the PC to your TomTom, you copy everything inside the /Backup01/ directory, but NOT the /Backup01/ folder itself....only its contents. You won't have a top-level folder on the TomTom, only the files and folders in the /Backup01/ directory copied to the ROOT of the TomTom.

Birdman,

Thanks very much. I understand what you are saying completely.

Now, as to getting data to a fresh SD:

When using Windows Explorer, what are the steps? Do I insert the SD and turn on the TT, or do I boot the TT and then insert the SD? I still feel I can't boot from the SD with nothing on it. Will the TT recognize blank media and revert to the internal memory? I think the TT just looks like any other memory stick or the likes, right, except I never have to eject it.

Thanks for any help

For the TomTom ONE series, the TomTom will only use either the internal memory or the SD card, not both. When you insert the SD card, the TomTom will automatically start using the SD memory and ignore the internal memory. Think of the SD card as a blank hard drive that you just installed to your PC.

In order for the SD card to work, you need need all the operating system files and then at least one map. So, insert the SD card first, plug the TomTom into your USB slot and then turn on the TomTom.

The TomTom will look like any other drive, memory stick, etc in Windows and you can simply copy all the contents of your /Backup01 directory to the TomTom and it will automatically go on the SD card.

And, YES, you should eject the TomTom just like any other memory stick to avoid potential data corruption on the SD card. TomTom HOME V2 has the "Disconnect Device" option, but I still use the Windows Remove Hardware icon
