Backup my TT

With all the discussions lately on the new firmware update and VR being disabled and a lot of workarounds to get it back I think I am for going updating my TT until there is some positive feedback on the new version that is coming out before I update anything. However I would appreciate it if someone would baby step me through the process of backing up my TT using windows explorer. I have always did my backups through TThome but would like to keep a folder for each backup in the future.
Thanks for the help

With your unit on and connected to the computer, simply use Explorer to navigate to the removable drive on your computer that TomTom represents (E:, maybe), highlight everything and copy to a folder on your computer. Maybe call this folder Fullbackup or something like that.

Yes, as 'dhn' states, it's pretty easy. I just backed my TT (3rd ed) using Windows explorer again yesterday.

After it's connected to the computer, I open Windows explorer and created a new folder under 'C' drive (click on 'C'; click 'File' in the pull-down, then 'new-folder'). It's up to you what you call it. I called mine, 'ZTomTom BU 3_20_08'. This way it's at the bottom of the list when alphabetized, and shows the date I backed it up. Next I 'right-click' on the TomTom device (for me it's the 'F' drive but may be different for you), then highlight 'copy'. Then mouse over to the new folder and 'right-click' and 'paste'. After about 20 to 30 minutes, all the files should be copied to your new folder with the same subdirectories as is on your TomTom device.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the replys. I don't have XP or Vista on home computer so am doing all my TT updates on my work computer. Since I don't want my backups on the work computer I'll file them on an external USB thumbdrive.

As mentioned, make sure you have Windows set to show ALL files and all file EXTENSIONS. You want hidden, readonly and system files showing so that you can select and copy them.

I actually burned a DVD disk with my original files after copying them to my computer. And now that this subject has been raised, it might be time for another DVD with my latest stuff including the new maps for US.

This thread got me thinking. I've just backed up my one XL and my SD card. Then burnt that on to a DVD, just in case I have a really bad day.
I guess you can never have enough stuff backed up!

Thanks it did. I just did what you described to a new 730. Does it make sense that it should only take about 7 minutes (1.9 gig 748 files) to do the paste on a Vista laptop?

Well, I'm not sure. It's been my experience that when ever I move files to/from TomTom, it takes awhile. It's got to be the slowest USB device I've ever used. I have another HDD that connects thru a USB port (MyBook) that I use to back up my 'C' drive. It copies 14Gig in 10 minutes using USB. Maybe TomTom is slower because of caching issues... not sure.
