avoid freeway option not working

one night, the freeway i was trying to enter was closed on multiple entrances so i pressed on avoid freeway. still it steadfastly direct me to take the freeway. why?
btw, i'm using xxl 540 and have updated to the latest map.

If you run across this again, replan your route ("Navigate to" your destination again) after configuring to avoid freeways to see if that changes the routing.
