Anyone having PLUS traffic problems?

I haven't been able to connect for the past few days (says my subscription is inactive), it may have something to do with me moving my subscription from one Tomtom to another a month ago.

Tomtom support has been unable to resolve, trying to remove/re-add traffic and create a new accounts, none of which helped.

Google Live Search is all screwed up for UK members. Wonder if the two are server releated?

Maybe.

When I have no satellite reception, PLUS traffic works fine.

Once I pick up a satellite signal, PLUS traffic says my subscription expired... weird...

Ive been trying to access google live search just tonight here in florida and not able to connect......been that way for about 2 to 3 hours tonight.....i checked again just before i got home and is still not working

Grrrr... I suspect it's a problem with my account if no one else is having problems. Their computers are all confused since I moved my traffic from my 720 to my 930.

Support is blaming my device, saying its defective. Possibly, but it sure seems like software issues to me. And it's a craiglist device so no warranty....

Oh well, time for the backup RDS-TMC, and I'm heading on a long drive to NYC tomorrow.

This is just getting comical.

I now have a big red screen that says:

TomTom Traffic
***@***@

Continue

If I select continue, nothing happens. If I power off then back on nothing happens.

You certainly seem to have had your share of TomTom problems lately. I know Plus traffic has been a headache.

BTW, did you ever get anywhere with transferring your gas price subscription?

The Tomtom knows the fuel transferred over, but HOME doesn't like it. So I couldn't get the initial setup files.

Tomtom support set up a dummy account with fuel for me, and that got the setup files onto my 930. After that I could update normally with HOME.

There's definitely system issues with attempting to transfer subscriptions from one device to another. Tomtom support says this should work fine, but it doesn't look like all parts of the Tomtom infrastructure like that.

So I have continued to try this with no success. I'm near certain it's a bug in the Tomtom servers, and their inability to reassign a subscription from one device to another under the same email address.

1) It appears that my cobwebs of my old 720 subscription are now permanently polluting the servers for my new 930 device. Regardless of whatever email address I use or create, the PLUS bluetooth servers give me the old 720's subscription, but it won't actually work. I even ran wireshark on my computer to check the server communication, and the subscription is coming from Tomtom's servers, not my 930. Tomtom support is unable to clear out or erase this corrupt subscription.

2) If Tomtom support tries to add a new subscription, the PLUS servers automatically tack it on to the end of my existing corrupt subscription, so they don't start until May 2010. My guess is I just have to wait out the corrupt subscription and maybe PLUS will start working again in May (or maybe it won't).

3) So after numerous calls to TT support, they basically said they no longer do detailed troubleshooting on PLUS traffic subscriptions since they are phasing it out. PLUS traffic is no longer on the US website, although it appears you can still buy it in Tomtom HOME. Tomtom just sent me a free 1-year traffic antenna to comp me for the unused portion of the unfixable subscription.

I've seen other posts of members who were unable to buy PLUS traffic subscriptions or renewals on the older ONE XL and GO 910 devices. Perhaps the same shutdown is affecting the newer GO models, too.

Bottom line - if you have PLUS traffic, don't try to move it to a new device, as it probably won't work.

Well.. just hoping a 940/950 makes it here during CES, otherwise I'll have to think long and hard about whether to compromise on EPT and music and just go with a 740. Yuck....

Yippie! My plus traffic is back! My corrupt subscription finally expired. and now the renewal subscription works!

Now the real question is whether I like the 740 or 930 better... I'm really leaning towards the 930. I may keep the 740 in the glove compartment in case I hit congestion, but the 930 music player's really nice.

Thought you said Live traffic is more accurate (in your area, anyway) than Plus Traffic??

Since I have yet to "Live" with anything TomTom, perhaps the uninitiated (myself included) could use an update on how traffic is being managed.

I have been, perhaps mistakenly, under the impression that both the Live and Plus traffic is coming from the same set of servers, and that only the RDS/TMC traffic came from a different source altogether. It was my further impression that the only difference between Live and Plus traffic was that the former was handled using an internal cellular device and the latter the user's own tethered cellular device. Am I missing something here?

LIVE is much more detailed traffic.

PLUS runs on the European LIVE server and uses pretty much the same back-end platform, but Tomtom only pays for Inrix data on the PLUS feed, so its quality is pretty much like RDS-TMC. In fact, as Inrix coverage has grown to occasional sideroads, PLUS hasn't. It's almost as if Inrix has classes of service, and PLUS is on the cheapest one. Tomtom phone support said they are abandoning PLUS, and it seems they're trying to wean all their customers off of it.

For LIVE traffic, Tomtom pays for high-end Inrix and adds Trafficcast, and it also uses other LIVE units as traffic probes. So it's data is much better.

But PLUS is lightning fast. A plus traffic download runs at 3g speeds (if you have a 3g phone), and takes 2-3 seconds to download traffic. LIVE traffic takes 15-30 seconds, because the Tomtom modem is only 2g speeds. RDS-TMC is the slowest, taking 1-2 minutes in rush hour.

PLUS really is the gold standard technology-wise, but I'm sure Tomtom support was overwhelmed with all the "how do I connect to bluetooth" phone calls, so they decided to integrate the data into the device to make it idiot proof. Still, the 740 is really a generation behind the 720. The 740 is inferior in every way except for the quality of the traffic feed they decided to put on it. It's a real shame.

So I'm stuck with the dillemma that Tomtom has forced upon high-end American customers. Do I take the 930, with the stability of app 8.302, the music player, the accuracy of EPT? Or is the much better traffic of the 740 worth the other downgrades?

Every time I drive with one device, I get mad and wish I had a feature from the other. WIth Sirius music stinking more every day, it makes the decision harder and harder. I'm almost settling into using the 930 all the time except for weekday evenings. And put up with the 740 just for the weekday evening errand runs during rush hour. Or I may just carry both all the time so I can switch on demand.

Tomtom could make this all go away by offering the high-end traffic on the PLUS system on the 930, or by selling a 940 in the US. But I gave up on Tomtom doing either.

It's pretty clear that Tomtom doesn't have any idea how to please high-end American consumers. Their traffic is so good and saves me so much time that I can't live without them, but they've managed to find one way after another to p**s me off again and again.

I'm really hoping that Apple doesn't kill off Nokia, because I really want Navteq to be able to invest in cloning IQroutes and HD traffic. My hope is that these technologies make it into Honda/Acura navigation soon, so I can trade up to a new car and enjoy navigation again.

Going strictly by today's TomTom's press release, their RDS-TMC traffic will produce just an efficient, time-saving trip as their live traffic:

"Combined with TomTom IQ Routes, the real-time traffic information via Lifetime Traffic Updates, ensures the smartest and fastest routing possible."

You gotta love marketing folk.:D
