Came on here looking for help with my wife's 720 which has frozen but is showing all the signs on disc corruption as it cannot be recognised, reformatted etc. Our Mac cannot find it and our PC can see it but cannot access the internal memory so cannot read or format. Seems to be we are not alone. Has anyone had a successful recovery from this situation?

Hi. Yes I have done a pin reset but it does not help. The device shows the signs of a corrupt boot sector and it looks on here and other forums that it is a problem others have.

Can you right click on the TT drive using Explorer to get to the Properities tab?

I guess a call to Support is necessary: 866-486-6866

Report back on your (hopefully successful) results.

Hi Guys

I'm From Brazil, sorry my bad english.

I'm with the same problem, interesting the exactly same problem, it is impossible make the format or make another format way.

I buy one external SD card, install the map and working very well, but when I put in the TT base and I make the connect in my PC, the TT start frozen
and it is impossible make the update in the TT site

We don't have support in Brazil and I don't know what do:confused:

Try a pin reset on the unit.

I just tried a lot of times.

I used this software (KILLDISK) to format the internal memory, but not have success

This software tried format per 19 hours and return the message

" ERROR(1117) READING SECTOR BAD "0" ON UNALLOCATED"

Do you have other way?

Thank you:(

KILLDISK does not reformat drives - it wipes them clean to prevent recovery of data (beyond forensic recovery)

you can try to not use the SD card to see if you can at least get your 720 to work -- I would reformat the SD card (fat32) via a card reader connected to my PC.

If you have a backup of your internal memory - now is the time to put it back on the 720

About KILLDISK ok I understanding not solve when I use this software Thank you

In all attempt I use only the internal memory the SD card is out

the windows not recognizes the internal drive when I try format with windows showing the message not recognize:(

I have the backup in external SD card, but it is impossible make send to internal memory, because the windows not recognizes

The internal memory is bad there is other solution ?

looks like you deleted the internal memory via format or erase

If you have a backup on the SD card then I would copy to a folder on my PC and look at what you have.

If you can't read the SD card, make sure you have the right kind of SD card reader - some readers do not read an SDHC card - you'll need one of those if your card is that type.

Somehow you have to find out if your backup on the SD card is all there - if not you may have to send back to factory

Mule

I've read succeeding posts but trying to tackle your problem with your original problem...

1- Do you have a hard disk backup of your Tomtom internal memory content?

2- Have you tried a ?chkdsk x: /f? on your internal or/and SD card?

3- Have you tried connecting your TT with the USB cable in a different USB slot on your PC? Sometimes a USB slot stops working when it used to be fine because some connectors become corroded, this happened to an old Brasilian friend who lived in Salvador do Bahia.

4- Do you have a separate USB card reader to read your SD card instead of relying only on the TT USB cable?

Answer: Yes I have

2- Have you tried a ?chkdsk x: /f? on your internal or/and SD card?
Answer:
Yes I tried a lot of times, the windows system showing de drive F: but not recognize the drive F:.
After this command chkdsk F: /F the system showing the error "is not possible open the drive F:"

Answer:
Yes I tried All slots of PC and also in others PC's with "OS Vista and OS XP"

I imagine if the internal flash memory is BAD in the first sector "0". Do you have other ideia? do you have other software that format low level?:(

Do you know one guide of the "motherboard" that I can change this internal chip?:(

If it sees the drive without being able to access it, it usually means it is unformatted, of a format it can't recognize or some essential components are not present such as FAT table. Your SD card needs to be formatted FAT32 if larger than 2GB. The problem seems to apply to your SD card but wonder about the state of your internal memory? I would try another SD card and put everyhting on it. By this I mean NavCore and all your internal memory content so it can boot from your SD card if your internal memory is problematic. When NavCore and system files are on the SD card, 720s can boot from the SD card.

It is rather rare that the internal memory goes bad but nothing is impossible with electronics. A connection could become unsoldered by a drop, corroded by highly saline humidity etc.

I don't know of any TT functional diagrams that electronics repairmen need to tackle problems. If anyone has one I'd love to hear about it. I've also looked for a few hours trying to find the Samsung integrated chipset for sale in unit quantity but never saw any.

I do hope your unit is still on warranty and know your unit was purchased outside Brazil as I never saw GO models advertised there. Even the ONE model is sold at a ridiculously high price!

I have a problem only in internal memory, my TT working normally with external SD card, but It is impossible make de update using TT website, because when I choose connect in my PC the TT, will be frozen.

The TT search first the internal memory, this is the BIG problem

Other BIG problem is, my warranty is valid only in USA:eek:

You could circumvent your TT Home update problem by copying NavCore to your SD card. TT Home does not recognize the difference between a removable USB disk being flash memory or SD/SDHC.

oops! If your internal memory is kaput and you can boot from the SD card, it means your SD card contains everything needed to boot and operate. When you connect your SD card to the PC, TT Home should recognize it just the same as it were your internal memory and be able to update with Quickfix and MapShare for the active map on your SD card. That is what I do on my ONE XL-S but have no choice to put everything on my SD card. I can even have, at the same time, my SD card in the card reader and the TT ONE XL-S connected with the USB cable and TT Home recognizes both asking me which to choose. I can differentiate both with the amount of memory left on each unit.

I suppose you have the Brasil map.
