If the only updates are QuickGPSFix I would say NO need to backup. If you have mapshare only to accept those changes that TomTOm validates then I would be comfortable saying NO you don't need to backup in that case either.

Any updates to the TomTom Application or TomTom Map updates, I would suggest backing up first.

good deal i didnt think i had to back up for little things. also in my backups i must also have the map in there somewhere right? what would it be under in that file?thanks again im having a blast with this thing:D

I forget the precise folder structure but your location for backups is changeable using your tomtom home software. Mind you, you didn't ask about that, did you?

The backup for the map itself will be in my documents/tomtom home/backup01/map and you'll find the NA folder or USA & Canada folder in the map folder.

I just 'know' the folder structure I listed isn't quite correct but it's reasonably close.......

allright i think im getting it now. the thing is when i first set up my tthome it was the older version. i backedup what i had then updated and backed that up. then i was updated to home 2.1 and it rewrites the backup. so now i have backup1 and backup2 in my computer. i assume the new tthome rewrites backup1 only? i hope. now in downloads i see my new map 710. so if i did have to backup iguess i would be alright then.thanks again for your patience with me again this is new for me.
