How come we do not get altitude on these GPS? They clearly can show it as the data is there. I think it would be handy to have as a displayable option. What do you think?

there is a freeware product called Tripmaster that can be installed - even on the new TT applications versions. Look for the links in the forum for their website, and carefully follow their installation instructions if you re using a TT version 7.xx. It includes an altimeter as part of the application - good for +/- 20 feet

I've also found some 3rd party freeware that is just an altimeter. The first one I tried doesn't seem to work (or I don't know how to make it display). A good, working stand alone altimeter would be great.

2 reasons:

1) It is not required for a car navigation device. You are at 'road level', and it doesn't need to know any more than that to get you from A->B.

2) GPS is exceptionally bad at giving altitude. It was never designed for that and it doesn't do it very well at all. If you want to know altitude you need a barometric altimeter. I dispute the +/- 20 feet figure. X,Y positioning is +/- 20 metres, Z positioning is significantly worse than that.

There is a standalone altimeter listed as item #4 on my 3rd party apps webpage:
