TomTom Model(s)
go 720
I have ordered a tt 720 and will be receiving it later today or tomorrow. Does anyone have any advice as to what I should do when I first get it? I'm looking forward to getting started and hope I made a good purchase. So hi to all, and thanks for any help in advance.

My first advice would be to wait a couple of weeks until you use your latest map guarantee. We are expecting that TomTom will release a new map for the 720 sometime in early August. The LMG can only be used once, so I'd hold out for closer to the end of the 30-days and see if the new map gets released.

Also, the FIRST thing you do after you unpack your unit and after you install HOME on your computer is BACK UP your TomTom. Then burn a copy of that backup onto a DVD because you can only have one TomTom backup at a time and any subsequent backup will write-over that initial backup. When you do finally get your free map upgrade, also burn that downloaded file onto a DVD.

Ask us about voice recognition when you're ready to play around a little.

The very first thing you should do is as Will suggested. Back up your unit. Do it using Windows Explorer. Make sure you have show hidden and system files and do not hide known file extensions. Then copy the entire drive to a backup location. A cd is a good location. Then after you get TT home installed backup with it too. Remember, you can't have too many backups :)

Thanks

Thanks for your advice will and bama. I will definitely be making a backup before I do anything else. I received my tt last night and have been playing with it to see how it all works. So far I'm very happy with my purchase. I noticed that my tt came with voice recognition available on the menu right out of the box. I was glad to see that. It works great and the bluetooth is set up as well. The only thing I was wondering about is do you have to let the battery completely drain before recharging? (like with cell phones and laptop battery's?) If I put it on the dock before the battery is dead will I be decreasing my battery's life? Thanks again.

No......the newer batteries do not need a complete drain before recharging.

I was just reading that the new Lion batteries are better served if they are not fully discharged nor over-charged. I think the charger will not over-charge but it's up to us to not fully discharge the things.

That's correct. Li-Ion don't develop memory so there's no need to completely drain the batteries. But they do have a lifetime of certain number of charge/discharge cycles. So, the more you discharge and recharge, the sooner your battery/unit will need to be replaced.

Will,

Do you think those batteries will last longer if we don't drain to a full discharge? The article I was reading seemed to imply that a small drain and recharge did not deduct from the number of cycles the battery can tolerate.

That's my understanding of Li-Ions. It's better for battery life to do a slight discharge and full recharge rather than a full discharge and a recharge.

Regardless, you can really only realistically expect 12-18 months of battery life before you start to see a decrease in battery life. And unfortunately these batteries are not replaceable.

I heard over and over again that LiIon batteries only have 1000 charging cycles.
I just repalced my year 2000 Sanyo mobile which would get plugged in at least 2 to 3 times a day and just now the battery still had a 2 hour talk capacity (rarely used that long, combined before recharging).

Main reason for getting a new phone is that it is very small and free with that 3 year contract.
