Address v Postcode

Does anybody know why sometimes the tomtom can only find a place by either address or postcode and not both.

Sometimes I will input where I am going to by the address and the tomtom does not find it. If I then try inputting the address by postcode it finds it. Sometimes it happens the other way around in that it can find it by address and not by postcode.

The mapping data doesn't really store specific addresses. Tomtom only knows a range of numbers for a given section of a street and then extrapolates the numbers in that range for a specific address. When you navigate to 123 High Street, the algorithm is really guessing where that address will be located. Sometimes, it's dead on or close, other times, not so much.

It's really being guided by lat/long values for an address.

Bottom line, if the data is incorrect in the map, the unit won't find a specific address.

Same with postal codes. I just saw a post on a different forum where a UK user entered the postal code and the tomtom directed him to the wrong town!

Just bad mapping data.

Last year I was going to a location near Newbury and entered just the postcode, the unit announced "You have arived at your destination" but I was in Reading!

A quick phone call to the person I was meeting resulted in the conversation going along the lines of:

"Ah your using a TomTom, this often happens with those units"

Suffice to say TomTom were made aware of this specific issue but I have no idea whether its been fixed as yet! - Mike
