Address Accuracy

Hello all,

Well I have to admit I'm a little concerned with this issue. I have had my tomtom one third edition just a little under a month. I've taken small trips with it and one big one to Florida. It has only been accurate getting me right to my destination 4 out of the 9 times I've plotted a route. It always seems to end me a few miles before my destination saying "You have reached your destination" but I'm clearly a mile or two away. 1 out of the 5 poi's I've navigated two have been in the right place... the other 4 were way off from their actual location. It has never had a problem getting me to the correct street but it seems like all the addresses are off. Any ideas? I've been trying to use the free map update but it won't let me for some reason. Just not sure if this is normal for this or if there may be something wrong. Thanks!

(I also did a search on here and didn't find really what I was aiming for)

The Poi's are indeed very problematic and not where the tomtom says they are far too many times. The addresses apparantly are set up on blocks of numbers and therefore they too are off, but generally not as much as the POI's.

Tonight I was browsing the unit looking up some local POI's and found several that are not even in the right community! I do not know how things can be that far out!

as for your free map upgrade, many people cannot get it through the home download and have to call tomtom support and press them for the upgrade. Don't hesitate to do so!

nothing wrong with your system, it's normal. welcome to the world of tomtom.

Could you give an example of a destination that you found to be a mile off? I'd like to test it on a newer map version.

sure! The address I had problems with was
2606 Scenic Gulf Dr.
Miramar Beach, FL 32550

The actual location is at the cross street of Maravilla Dr. and Scenic Gulf Dr.

My tomtom ended us near Monaco Street which is to the east of the actual location of our destination. It also ended us on the left and our destination was on the right.

I have just tried navigating to a POI near me using google and sending it to my GPS. When I did that it located the POI correctly and displayed it correctly on my gps.... when I try to navigate to the same POI using just the TomTom alone... it is way off

I have a new TomTom One 3rd Edition
I tried to get to Jones Falls in Ontario (which is near Owen Sound). The suggested location was nearly 50kms away from where it should be near Eugenia / Flesherton.

Yes, the Miramar Beach location is way off. I compared it with Google maps and they are quite far apart.

Jones Falls, ON, seems to be a bit obscure. Both TomTom and Google maps put it down in the Rideau lakes north of Kingston. Be aware that small communities have undergone amalgamation and may go under a different name now.

Silly question, but it wasn't Walters Falls that you were thinking of?

hmm.. well this has me wondering about the reliability of the tomtoms. I guess I'm going to have to compare everywhere I go with google first and then navigate using cross streets if the address is off in the tomtom. Kind of a let down. Hopefully they'll find a way to fix these. I wouldn't be so annoyed if it only happened every once in a while... however, it has let me down numerous times and ended me in the wrong place. Thanks to all for the help I really appreciate you guys looking into this for me!!

well I have to admit that this is kind of a let down. It has me questioning the reliability of the tomtom's. I'm planning on just comparing my ending locations with google and if I find google's to be different I will have to navigate in the tomtom using cross streets instead of actual addresses to get me to exactly where I'm trying to go. I wouldn't really have a problem with this but since this unit has let me down numerous times and left me "lost" I don't really feel confident using it. I probably won't use the POI's anymore since they have all gotten me lost. Sure hope tomtom fixes this because I really do like the unit and it's features but it's just not reliable at all. Well thank you all for the help I really appreciate it!!!

Sorry to hear that you are having such accuracy problems with your TT. I have used my 910 for over a year and have never really encountered a major location problem. It does sometimes take you a strange route but it gets me where I am going. I can tell you that the POI's are not TT's strong point but I am not sure where they get them. And they change from version to version and not always for the better. When the address is inputed I have never had a problem. Have you asked TT support for an opinion? Let us know if you get a solution that can be shared with others.

ya, I have called them and the guy said that it isn't possible to get it that close and have them be that accurate. I'm assuming he mis-understood my problem since I know that that just can't be right. He tried to tell me that the Tomtom's didn't have the ability to get you close to you ending location. I will try calling again today to see if I can get a different answer. Thanks!!

Nope...Definitely Jones Falls.
It comes up as a nearby POI when at Owen Sound and is part of the Grey County waterfall tour (VERY pretty countyy side...stunning at this time of the year with all the snow). Juts don't try and navigate their with your TomTom ...you will land up veyr close to Hoggs Falls and Eugenia Falls !

Here's the tourist tour link --> http://www.visitgrey.ca/travel-experiences/waterfalls-and-waterways/waterfall-tour/

Having said that, we did go to Walters Falls too....well worth it.

IMO, if you know where you are going BEFORE you leave, find it on Google Earth, record the Lat/Lon and navigate to the lat/lon, not the address.

Clearly, this doesn't work of you are going to a specific "building", but many times we may be navigating to something that is visually obvious on Google Earth such as a campground, beach, airport or a large complex. If that's the case, you can navigate right to the front door or gate as necessary.

I know which falls you mean now, I passed by them on my way up to wiarton earlier this week.

I see where the problem seems to have occured. When you searched on your tomtom it looked for a town called Jones Falls, when you needed a tourist attraction.

Someone should add them as tourist attractions via mapshare.

Generally, the telatlas maps are off a bit. According to google earth and tomtom, my house is three houses south and on the east side of the street. If you look for my house on google maps (navquest maps), the location is almost spot on.

Ya, I just got done speaking with TT tech support. They had me delete my version of maps and I am currently downloading an updated version. I'll let you all know if it fixes the problem so if any others are having this same issue, they may be able to get it resolved. I also asked the tech guy about tomtom teaming up with google. As I'm sure most of you know you can only send business addresses to your tomtom as of now. He did state that tomtom is working with google to be able to offer the ability to send directions to your device. So you would be able to plot a route that wasn't just a business. Thanks again to you all and I'll let you know if the update cures the problem or not.

well.. the new version of maps finished and it didn't solve the problem. Not sure what else to do. Thanks again though for all the help!

Regarding Jones Falls

It's there on my map as a POI. Parks and things like that will be found in the POI's, not as an address location. So really, the map is fine in this case.

Is that the Jones Falls on highway 6, closer to Springmount, just west of Owen Sound?

I did see another that was closer to Markdale on Hwy 6.
