Adding map to SD card - did I do this right?

I very recently purchased a TT XL-S (my first GPS) in the USA, so it came with US and Canada maps. Since I will be spending a lot of time in the UK, I wanted to purchase and install that map also. My TT said I did not have enough memory, so I put in a 2GB SD memory card. When I plugged it it, the TT would not start up completely. I guess it is not smart enough to boot off its internal memory and then use the SD memory as additional storage only. It kept wanting me to remove the SD memory card.

Anyway, after searching through the manual to no avail, I tried plugging in the TT to my PC, and doing a Restore to the SD memory. (I did a complete Backup from internal memory just prior to doing this.) This worked, and the TT would then start up and run normally off the SD memory card. I was then able to download and install the UK map on the SD memory card.

Everything seems to work just fine, but I wonder if I did this correctly. Should I have been able to load just the UK map on the SD memory, without all the TT system files?

Clearly I am a novice at this. I must say I am really disappointed with the TT online support. Questions go in, but nothing comes back.

Only the x20 and x30 models can have the system files in a different location from the map folders.

Your model and others requires both map and system stuff on internal or both on sd card. So, if you will be travelling to the UK, you can copy the US map from the card to a folder on your computer for safe keeping and replace it with a uk map and retain the system files there so, again, map and system files reside in same location.

Then, when back in North America, reverse the process.

(the above explanation will also work if you want both system and map in internal memory instead of the sd card).

Just remember, whatever location you choose: MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP OF EACH MAP on your computer.

You can always replace the operating system by downloading again but map replacement will cost $$$$. ;)

enjoy your trip(s).
