TomTom Model(s)
Tom Tom One New Edition + 2.0 GB SD Card / Tom Tom Go 720 + 4.0 GB SD Card
I just unpacked my new 720 and currently downloading the north American update. How long should the update take it has already been 20 minutes. when my friend copied and pasted to SD card it took a few hours is that normal. After copy and pasting all info to SD card and add the vr file then i should put in the tt 720. Thanks for any advice- note i had to delete some voices and audio books to be able to load the update.

hope you backed it up first!

Yes, I backed it up first. I have a dsl t.1 line and it is still downloading already over 40 minutes.

Seems even worse today than usual. I'm working on a fresh download of the W/C Europe map at the moment, and we've been at it for over 2 hours, and not yet 1/2 done. That map is about 40% larger than the NA map, though.

My first NA map was a couple of weeks ago, and their servers were in a better mood -- only took about 1/2 hour.

I guess all of the folks that got these for Christmas are just finally getting them into the docking cradles:p

Like you, I had to clear out extraneous voices, etc., to make space. I'm sticking with Suzan for now. Here's my new splash screen for her (courtesy of Suzie Wilks)... wish I could give her to you at full scale, but download limits prohibit that. Well, it was something to do while I waited for the map update...

Yup, it's been a slow day in mapland. I finally retrieved my W/C Europe map (even larger than the NA map by a good bit) after about 4 hours.

As for a "product code"...

Take a look at the ttgo.bif file either in your TomTom or in the backup file that you should already have of your TT on your hard drive. The root directory of either will contain that file, and it will give you the sort of information you see below, including your "Device ID" and its serial number. That's not the only way to get this sort of information, but it's the surest. If you have TTHome loaded, select "Help" and "System Information". Loads of info there.

From the BIF file:

DeviceName=TomTom GO 720
DeviceVersionHW=GO 720
DeviceSerialNumber=XXXXXXXXXXXX
DeviceUniqueID=XXXXX XXXXX
RamDiskVersion=20040301
BootLoaderVersion=10012
LinuxVersion=1000
ApplicationVersionVersionNumber=7221
ApplicationVersion=8572
UserLanguage=English US
etc...

Im on a DSL line and it was about 4 hours to complete, I aborted it several times thinking there was a problem, but once I figured out to be patient, and let it run after I went to bed, it was all done in the morning, and all is well. NA_2g 710.1584

I didn't think that 3 or 4 hours for 2 gigs was unreasonable

Hope that helps! (be patient!)

This forum is the best, everything downloaded great and the step by step instructions regarding enabling voice recognition was top notch and it works great. The only problem I had was my vista on my new dell laptop gave me trouble but my Savior was my dell desk top with xp. Tech support advised that no more product keys are needed for the 720. I have one question? my blue-tooth hands free works great but I can not get my text messages through my 720, tech support advised Me they will no longer in the near future support that function due to driving hazard's and state laws. Has any other member got this information as well. I have verizon for cell carrier and my phone is Motorola w385, any help getting text to work will be appreciated.
