How to actually fix the problem

As I said in other thread, call CS.
You seem to be missing the point of forums, they are so that you don't have to call support. Especially for people like me who got a TomTom for their parents and wanted to set it up before giving it to them instead of fielding 50 phone calls when setting it up.

I found the fix in an Amazon review. Basically, delete the map off your device and off of your computer (located in your documents), reboot your computer and reconnect your device. Once it sees the device click "Update". It will notice there are no local copies and will re-download the latest maps pack.

I suppose just telling people to call Customer Support is easier than giving them a solution. Oh wait, they're closed the day before Christmas this year so I could have either given them a broken device or researched a solution. How did you get to be a "super moderator" again?
