2 problems with XL340T

I just bought a new TomTom XL 340T and have 2 questions:
1. GPS will not start when when it is connected to car adapter and the car is started like my other gps. Is it by design? How can I change it? It's very inconvenient to press power button each time.
2. Selecting mute is NOT muting the device. It still gives me voice direction. Is there a fix for it?
Any advice is appreciated!
Thanks!

TomToms do not have an auto power on function as some other brands do. There is no workaround.

Are you saying that under voice preferences you have mute selected but it's not taking effect?

No auto power on??? Terrible design decision! How can they miss it? There must be at least an option to do it. Really disappointed!!!

As for the muting - it keeps telling me "Turn left in .5 miles", etc... even though the muted icon is displayed.

Thanks dhn!

One other option for silence is to install the custom voice file that is indeed silent then select that on the device, download and unzip the files I have attached to this post and put them in the "voices" folder on your device, then go to Change Preferences/ Manage Voice/ Switch Voice and select the silent one from whats available - Mike

Are you really serious? That is a main reason you would choose a GPS over routing, TTS, updated maps, traffic reporting, etc ? I'm sure there is a model around $50 which will turn on automatically for you, but look out, it might drive you off a cliff. Don't waste our time here.

Now, be fair........

Some people really would like that functionality. Especially those that hard wire their units to the automobile and leave the connector usb plug to connect to the unit.

Isn't a priority for me (or you, I gather :) ) but we can still all get along, can't we? :D
